Yesterday, the Joke Smit College celebrated 100 years of emancipatory education. Inspired by Joke Smit, the College remains committed to promoting emancipation and addressing educational inequality. It offers young adults not only the opportunity to earn a diploma, but also the chance to develop themselves and build a future with new possibilities. To mark this special anniversary, Oelbers was commissioned in the spring to create a contemporary artwork that would embrace the school's vision and reflect Joke Smit's philosophy. Although the sculpture, TAKING UP SPACE, had already been created earlier that year, its strong connection with the school's vision made it a natural choice for the anniversary. The committee therefore decided to give the work a permanent place at the College. Yesterday, the sculpture was officially unveiled by Mrs. Hedy d' Ancona, a leading figure in the emancipation movement and a close personal friend of the late Joke Smit. The Mayor Esmah Lahlah was also present at the unveiling ceremony.
