BABIECA WAS THE LEGENDARY WARHORSE OF THE SPANISH KNIGHT EL CID (RODRIGO DÍAZ DE VIVAR, 11TH CENTURY). As a young boy, El Cid was given the opportunity to choose a horse from his master’s stables. Among all the magnificent Andalusian stallions, he chose a modest grey horse. His master named him “Babieca,” meaning “fool” or “simpleton.” The name remained, but Babieca grew into a magnificent and courageous warhorse, faithfully carrying El Cid through countless battles and victories.
