Last November I was asked to think about a sculpture that would tell the story of the old lighthouse in Harlingen. At the foot of the old lighthouse are four little cottages. Two of them will be a bed and breakfast, just as the lighthouse is now for several years. I new straight away I would love to make the lighthouse keeper for this project. He must have lived there in this little cottage and take good care of the lighthouse. In my imagination I saw him sitting at his strong wooden table, eating or reading books. Every now and then the lighthouse keeper comes out of his little cottage and stands in his garden on his bare feet, and looks up to the light.
After discussing it with the owner of the lighthouse I was given the wonderful opportunity to make a life size bronze sculpture of the lighthouse keeper for this project. I worked on the sculpture for months, and on the 30th of April the lighthouse keeper was revealed and is now looking up the light of the old lighthouse in Harlingen.
I made my latest work in commission which was a wonderful adventure for me. I am very pleased with the result, but unfortunately I can not show you more just now because the sculpture will be revealed on the 30th of April. The clay sculpture is hidden in a mould, and will be bronze cast very soon now by Bronsgieterij Flassh. I shall keep you informed.
Masterchef Marco Poldervaart, Restaurant ’t Havenmantsje in Harlingen, and I organized a wonderful wine tasting art event. At first our special guests were welcomed in my studio to get aquainted with my art, and combined with the art they were spoiled by Marco Poldervaart with the most beautiful wine and amuses. Later we walked to Restaurant ’t Havenmantsje were the guests enjoyed an artist diner, prepared by Masterchef and Sculptor together. For one evening I was working as a waitress and tried very hard to remember all the ingredients in the 10 wonderful courses. It was good fun and I know for sure that cooking is an art!
